I use two under- bed plastic containers, drill holes for drainage, fill with grow mix, plant and water. I have lights on chains and raise at they grow. I basically grow any green that I have seeds left of. I get such pleasure going down with a cup of tea to tend to them and feel like I’m getting away with something when I go pick a salad of greens for free when they’re $8 bucks a pound at the market.
They’re not free because my electric bill shows the difference but emotional value far outweighs the cost.

I also start a couple tomato plants by rooting a couple slips taken from a plant in the garden. I will plant a couple pots of green beans, a pot of beets, bring in one pepper plant and one eggplant to try to continue growing over the winter. I also bring in a couple pots of flowers to continue blooming all winter and if any potatoes spout in my potato bin I plant them in a couple bushel baskets or 5 gal buckets instead of throwing them away. Before spring I’ll have new baby potatoes.

Since I use leftover seeds and slips and plants from the garden, it doesn’t cost me anything except the electricity. It gives me SUCH pleasure and gets me thru the winter, and it’s so much cheaper than counseling!
