I just have to comment on how MUCH I agree with your assessment of the idea we were sold growing up in the 80s and 90s of what it means to be a successful woman. I, too, worked hard in school and went on to earn a doctorate in molecular biology and get a great job as a scientist. But once I had my own two children, I no longer wanted to spend 40 hours a week working on someone else’s goals and priorities at work. I switched to part-time for 3 years and then eventually left work and started homeschooling. Isn’t it funny how our culture told us that we needed to get higher level degrees and a time-consuming career to be happy and successful? I loved my education and I’m glad I have that background to share with my children as I teach them, but I’m happier and more fulfilled now than when I was working full time and building my career. I feel much more well-rounded and “real” with all the great books we read, gardening, raising chickens, keeping bees, cooking real food that we grew together, and enjoying the slower pace that homeschooling allows. It’s nice to read your blog and meet a kindred spirit.

You will always be a veterinarian, no one can take that away. But if you never started you would never have been known as a Tomato Farmer. I think it’s great that you did. If you want people to look at you really cross-ways tell them you’ve become a worm farmer, you’ll get used to the blank stares. Ha ha.
